Summary:While Singapore’s bilingual education policy has been widely hailed as an educational success, it is also hoped to function as a multi-pronged approach toward a multicultural society. With the revitalization of China as an economic power, it is increasingly contended that the learning of Chinese Proverbs can play a pivotal role in multilingual knowledge economics. Yet in Singapore’s education system, “Chinese Proverbs” has been removed from the syllabus – “2011 Syllabus Chinese Language Secondary.” The elimination of this curriculum can bring about adverse effects because “Chinese Proverbs” is essentially the cornerstone of the Chinese culture and traditions. As language is connected to cultures, values and traditions, “Chinese Proverbs” serves as a platform for students to be acquainted with their cultures and hence foster a sense of rootedness in them. In this thesis, a rigorous survey was carried out to analyze and gain insights on students’ perceptions of “Chinese Proverbs.” The experimental findings were then used to interpret how factors such as, “social markers”, “academic results” and “spoken home language” have impacted students’ beliefs about “Chinese Proverbs.”
