Firstly, these pragmatic particles will be compared with the analysis done by Soh (1995) and Ho (2003) to reflect the changes on the rate of usage and functions of the pragmatic particles found in Singapore spoken Mandarin over the past 20 years. This will then be further looked into by investigating its pragmatic functions. Next, there will be an analysis on the factors affecting the distribution of the high frequency pragmatic particles (ah、lah、mah and leh) when used as sentence final particle (SFP). The outcome will then be compared with Pak’s (2014) analysis of the SFP found in Chinese Gigaword Corpus (using Singapore Chinese news as the main source) to discover the similarities and differences in the distribution of SFP in Singapore Chinese news and Singapore spoken Mandarin. The results obtained show that the frequency which pragmatic particle is used in Singapore spoken Mandarin is not always affected by the number of pragmatic functions it has. The outcome also shows that the gender of the speaker is the only variable which does not have a correlated relationship with ah、lah、mah and leh. This study also shows that there are some differences in the distribution of ah and lah while the distribution of mah is relatively similar in both Singapore Chinese news and Singapore spoken Mandarin.
