论“建国一代”的翻译语境与社会属性 = A study on the translation context and social qualities of “Pioneer Generation”

“建国一代” 是新加坡独有的华语词汇，此概念首次在 2012 年提出，主要倡导国民饮水思源，对建国时期为新加坡做出贡献的年长一代表示认可。通过官方翻译，“建国一代”起初是“Founding Generation”的译词。“Founding Generation”起初毫无明确定义，官方使用译的翻译手段把“建国一代”介绍到译入语中，正是使用和推广政府政策导向的初步手段，注入了政治的意识形态。在 2014 年，随着“建国一代配套”的推行，掀起了讨论和追溯“建国一代”词语的热潮。社会人士与媒体纷纷讨论有关老年人的问题。这时，“Founding Generation”的使用已渐渐淡化，被“Pioneer Generation”取代。官方和媒体广泛地推广，将“Pioneer Generation”和“建国一代”对等。配合新加坡建国 50 周年，政府进一步实行包容性政策，对建国的前辈们表示致敬与感谢。据此，本文以“建国一代”译名翻译的理论和实践为主，结合 1965 年新加坡独立建国的背景，探讨译词的诞生过程与意义，以“目的论”来探索官方翻译的策略。本文也将结合新加坡的政治导向，深入探讨译词的社会属性。"Jian Guo Yi Dai" is Singapore's unique Chinese phrase. It was first introduced in 2012, to encourage the citizens to remember their roots, and to acknowledge the elders’ contribution to Singapore after the nation’s independence. Officials have initially translated "Jian Guo Yi Dai" as "Founding Generation", which had no official or precise definition in the early phases. Instead, Officials translated the title with use of the Free Translation Method to bring "Jian Guo Yi Dai" into the translated context. This is the government's early act of promoting the translated title in policies and indoctrinating political ideology. In 2014, with the introduction of "Pioneer Generation Package", many concerns and discussions were raised on the title "Jian Guo Yi Dai", not excluding the majority of society as well as the media on elderly problems. This was the moment the usage of "Founding Generation" gradually decreased, and eventually replaced by the title "Pioneer Generation". Officials and media equated "Pioneer Generation" to “Jian Guo Yi Dai" and highly promoted it. As Singapore past its 50th years of independence, the government started to express their gratitude and respect to the elders, with effort to promote an inclusive society. This thesis would explore the translation theory and practical usage behind “Jian Guo Yi Dai”, the birth process and definition of the title. It would also include Singapore’s development after its independence and shift in policies, usage of the "Skopo theory" to justify the method of translating and discuss the social qualities of the phrase as well.
