Summary: | In line with the social and demographic changes in our society, Changi Airport (Singapore)
actually offers complementary wheelchair services. Passengers could request for the
wheelchair service from the Information and Customer Service counters. These passengers
are usually transported around the terminal by having a service staff pushing the passenger on
a wheelchair to the designated place manually. However, the volume of users for this service
is very much variable , thus this form of service transportation is labour intensive and very
much inefficient as manpower is required to maintain the required service quality standards.
Moreover, additional cost is incurred for a minimum workforce standing by to handle surges
in service demand for particular arriving and departing flights.
This project aims to develop a smart wheelchair system that enables the transportation of
multiple passengers at a time with minimal human supervision without compromising on
passenger safety and comfort. With the broad scope of the Smart Wheelchair system, the
objective of this project will be focused on the development of an Android Application for
the Smart Wheelchair operation. As the Smart Wheelchair requires the notebook programmes
and coding for the starting up, running, and stopping of the operation, the Android
Application will be developed to replace the necessity of the notebook, and also providing the
user with a simple and functional user interface for operating the Smart Wheelchairs.
The selected integrated development environment (IDE) used to develop the android
application would be Android Studio, the official and recommended IDE for Android
application development. The Android Studio’s coding is written in Java programming
language.
At the end of the project, the developed application’s stability and functionality were then
tested with the Algorithm Flow Test, Signal Simulation Test, and lastly an actual test on the
Smart Wheelchair operation. The tests had proven the application to be well-stable and fully
functional. |
