Summary: | Many educational institutions are now adopting flipped learning in their pedagogy, leading to an increased number of e-learning platforms. Student evaluations are also moving towards formative assessments, where students are evaluated during their learning process. With the rise of flipped classrooms and the increased need to intervene along the student’s learning process, it becomes imperative for online education systems to be intelligent enough to probe into the process of learning. Information Visualization can be the key to making these online systems more intelligent, as it plays an important role in data analytics. By transferring the large amount of e-learning platform data into actionable suggestions, we are enabling course administrators to improve the effectiveness of their course.
In this thesis, we study the fundamentals of information visualization (from data collection and pre-processing to information visualization techniques) and web application engineering before discussing the design and implementation of an intelligent information visualization system for the EE3014 Digital Signal Processing e-learning course. This intelligent dashboard aggregates data from the course, and displays it as media for easy and quick interpretation. Following development, a usability test was conducted to evaluate the ease-of-use and the results were discussed to identify areas for improvement. The generated visualization charts are analysed in greater detail to generate insights on the effectiveness of the e-learning course. |
