Thus, a lot of attention and emphasis is placed on creating a successful film adaptation. However, due to the fundamental difference in the mediums and language of literature and film, the process of adapting a literature piece into a visual movie is not easy. The debate and discussions became even more heated with the increasing popularity of Ms. Zhang Ailing’s novels. Her novels are full of movie characteristics, yet after adaptation, the results are often unsatisfactory. Thus this paper aim to find the special characteristics a successful film adaptation should have, by looking into the relationship of literature and film, as well as studying the film adaptations of Ms. Zhang Ailing novels. If we were to set our sights only on two standards: to be “faithful” to or to “mutate” the original piece, we can safely say that the development of film adaptations would be restricted by it. A film adaptation is very different from an original movie or literature, after the process of adapting and changing, film adaptations had gained their own set of unique characteristics. Only by taking into account both the literature value and film aesthetics, can we understanding and unleash the beauty of film adaptations. Thus, this paper aim to use the classic standards to film adaptation as foundation to discuss the problems and challenges faced when adapting Ms. Zhang Ailing’s novels, as well as finding the special characteristics of a film adaptation. This paper hope to be able to find the “middle point” and balance of both literature and film’s advantages, in attempt to solve the problems faced when adapting a literature piece into a film.
