The reasons pertaining to why the translator abandoned the traditional translated term “Lan Hua” and why Singapore continues to use the name “Hu Ji Hua” deserve further study. “Hu Ji” is the transliteration of the English word “Orchid”, and this translation process was affected by different factors, such as the interrelation between the translated term and its socio-cultural attributes, target audience and the needs of the target language environment etc. Using Skopos theory, this paper aims to examine these factors to give an insight on the translator's goals in the process of translation, and after which explore the functions of the translated term as well as the intentions of the transliteration form. These three aspects of the translator's translation purpose help in understanding the birth of the translated term. Based on the Rewriting theory, this paper will also analyse how political and social ideology and poetics within Singapore’s social context manipulate the translated term and how they rewrite its socio-cultural attributes so as to understand the evolution of the translation functions and values of “Hu Ji”. Finally, this paper concludes that the associations and cultural connotations of “Lan Hua” are not applicable to “Hu Ji Hua” in Singapore’s context, thus the translator chose to create a new translated term to conform to the target language society.
