从当代维吾尔诗歌看维族的自我身份 = Shattering mirrors : Uyghur identity through the lens of modern Uyghur poetry

Yet, it has always been restricted to those who knows the Uyghur language and thus it proliferation was constrained within its geographical location of Xinjiang. With such a limited access, it is no wonder that it has not been studied thoroughly by non-Uyghurs in the world. Recently, scholars have translated Uyghur modern poetry into English and some of the Uyghur poets translated their poetry into Mandarin. This is a significant step for Uyghur poetry to enter the realm of world literature. Currently, Xinjiang is allegedly a police-state and the world has seen many atrocities done by the state against the Uyghurs. This situation is not new, however, and it is rooted in Xinjiang’s history as a border of past empires. Hence, this paper aims to examine the different voices of Uyghurs without and within Xinjiang, to gain a better understanding of their perception of Xinjiang‘s realities. This paper also aims to present the Uyghurs as a collective people and shatter their monolithic stereotype, whether be it a violent ethnicity or vulnerable victims. |
