Singlish translation : a case study of Sarong Party Girls

This paper explores the under-researched domain of the translation of Colloquial Singaporean English, or Singlish, by analysing the common Singlish features used in Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan’s Sarong Party Girl, a novel that is written in Singlish. This paper provides a systematic classification of common Singlish features, a discussion of the etymologies and functions of these Singlish features and examples of their suggested Mainland Colloquial Chinese translation. By exploring the challenges present and strategies employed in Singlish translation, this paper aims to provide Singlish translators with a more structured way to approach this field of translation, specifically in the genre of Singaporean literature.
