This study advances the literature of expatriate management in MNEs by spotlighting the roles of the HCNs’ identification with the MNE and career development support received by the HCNs as key factors affecting the HCNs’ decisions to provide help to expatriates. According to the data collected in four countries (Australia, China, India, and Singapore), the HCNs’ identification with the MNE and their perceived subsidiary support for career development are positively related to their extra-role helping behavior toward the expatriates. Further, the positive relationship between MNE identification and extra-role helping behavior becomes stronger when the subsidiary’s career development support is high. We also provide post-hoc analyses to explore the potential differences of the four host countries in these relations. 2020-09-01T07:00:00Z text application/pdf https://ink.library.smu.edu.sg/lkcsb_research/6596 info:doi/10.1016/j.intman.2020.100778 https://ink.library.smu.edu.sg/context/lkcsb_research/article/7595/viewcontent/When_do_host_country_nationals_help_expa.pdf http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/ Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business eng Institutional Knowledge at Singapore Management University host country national extra-role helping behavior organizational identification career development support Asian Studies Human Resources Management International Business Strategic Management Policy
