Summary: | Yaowaraj is a big Chinese community in which Chaozhou Chinese people and Thai Chaozhou Chinese people settled. One thing which reflects the distinction of their language and culture is Chinese auspicious signs: Tiaofu and Duilian. Chinese auspicious signs are written in Chinese characters with decent meanings and painted in black or gold ink on red paper. One purpose of using these auspicious signs is to offer blessing in various occasions. Most of their houses use Chinese auspicious signs. It is very interesting to study the perception of the meanings of Chinese auspicious sign in these people. This research analyzes 58 Chinese auspicious signs perceived by the people classified into 4 groups: each of which consisted of 3 people: Chaozhou Chinese people whose age is more than 65 years old, Thai Chaozhou Chinese people whose age is more than 65, Thai Chaozhou Chinese people whose age is 45-60 and Thai Chaozhou Chinese people whose age is 25-40 years old. The result shows that their perception of Chinese auspicious signs falls into 5 categories: 1) People of all groups perceive the meaning of the signs similarly; 2) People of all groups understand the signs' meaning differently; 3) People of some groups do not understand the meaning of some of the signs; 4) Some groups perceive the meaning of the signs differently from the others; and 5) Some groups have better knowledge of the sings than the others. All these reveal that the younger these people are, the less knowledge they have of the Chinese auspicious signs. |
