INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/44390 Coffee is one of the most popular beverages nowadays. This can be seen from the increasing of cafés and coffee products that are on the market which target college students. One of the substances in coffee is caffeine. However, caffeine can also cause undesired effects, such as insomnia, tachycardia, or gastrointestinal problems. In order to study Indonesian college students’coffee consuming habit and their knowledge, a research had been conducted through questionnaire distribution via online to 151 college students and quantification caffeine in 20 coffee brands was done. Results showed there were 96.00% college students drink 1-2 cups of coffee everyday in order to enhance focus in the learning process (65.71%). There were 60.71% college students who had experienced undesired effects, such as tachycardia (63.11%), insomnia (42.72%) and gastrointestinal problems (35.92%). College students’knowledge towards coffee and its effect is considered to be good as they were able to answer 3 out of 4 questions correctly. Caffeine quantification was done on 20 samples coffee products, including instant coffee, coffee powder, and ‘ready-to-drink’coffee. Validation was first conducted with linear regression y=40.629x + 1844.5 was obtained with r 2 =0.995. Detection and quantification of limit are 18.45 and 5.54 µg/mL. Recovery percentage values of 3 different caffeine concentrations were 100.4; 96.2; 99.3%. Variance coefficients were 1.9; 0.2; 0.7%. Caffeine was extracted using liquid-liquid extraction with ethyl acetate as solvent. Extract was evaporated and dissolved in ethyl acetate to be measured under TLC densitometry. The mobile phase used was 5% acetic acid in ethyl acetate. Result showed highest caffeine content was found in CA brand (159.23 mg/glass) and 20 samples which caffeine were quantified showed caffeine content in coffee products didn’t surpass the limit that was permitted, which was 400 mg/day. Therefore, coffee products are safe to be consumed 1 to 2 cups daily. text
