總結:For a long time, the translation process has played a vital role as“the magical bridge between cultures”by creating an equivalent relation between the source text and the target text. However, while making every effort to bring their translation closer to the source language, the translators tend to ignore “proper names” when encountering them. In fact, the translation of proper names sometimes exerts a great impact on the significance of the whole text because of their cultural implications. Furthermore, the cultural factors in proper names can hinder the translation process and become a real challenge to every translator. As a result, many studies have been conducted to analyze and thence find appropriate translation strategies for the cultural obstacles from proper names. On the contrary, this topic seems to be lacking in interest from the English – Vietnamese translation linguistics. This concern inspires the researcher to conduct a comprehensive study on the translation strategies which are employed to deal with cultural constrains in proper name translation. In the limited scope of a bachelor thesis, the study only focuses on one case: “The old man and the sea” by Ernest Hemingway and its Vietnamese translation “Ông già và biển cả” by Lê Huy Bắc. By answering the questions about the translation procedures, recognizing cultural constrains and their influences on translator‟s choice of strategies during the translation of proper names in the novella, the study is hoped to expand the readers‟ understanding of this field.
