Summary:In a multitude of literature, emotional intelligence has been linked to be a predictor of job performance. Utilizing the ability-based model of emotional intelligence, this study factors in the interaction effect of the demand for emotional labor to it. The study further narrows down job performance into three dimensions: task performance, contextual performance and counterproductive work behaviors. The moderating effect of the demand for emotional labor in organizations will be explored in relation to its influence to an employee's emotional intelligence and the three dimensions of job performance. Data was gathered from two hundred and eighty-six rank and file employees in the Philippines, but only two hundred and thirty eight of them were analyzed. Similar to previous studies, findings point out the significance of emotional intelligence as a predictor of job performance. However, results reveal that it is only to a certain extent. Emotional labor has propensity to moderate the relationship of emotional intelligence only with regards to task and contextual performance.
