Summary:This article discusses several metacognitive strategies and their importance in the teaching of comprehension in English language classrooms. Strategies for text comprehension are located in three phases of the lesson; planning, monitoring and evaluation (Miguel, 1996). In the planning phase strategies such as brainstorming, making visual representations, making semantic/cognitive maps, skimming and scanning through are discussed. In the monitoring phase, comprehension monitoring and production monitoring are given focus. Finally, in the evaluation phase, self-evaluation strategies are identified.
