关联翻译理论视角下《和合本》与《新普及译 本》隐喻翻译研究——以《雅歌》为例 = On translation of metaphors in the CUV and CNLT from the perspective of relevance translation theory: a case study of song of songs

However, as time progresses, language expressions are also changing. New bible translations are gradually published, one of them being the Chinese New Living Translation, which is gaining popularity due to its lively expressions and easily understandable text. This thesis seeks to examine the translation of metaphors from the Song of Songs in these two bible translations. As a unique book of the Bible, the Song of Songs consists of a large number of metaphors. The author divides the metaphors into four categories, namely universal metaphors, cultural metaphors, geographical metaphors, and theological metaphors. Using relevance translation theory, this paper analyzes the different translation strategies adopted by the two bible translations. Optimal relevance is an important concept of relevance translation theory. It is also the goal of the translator to pursue optimal relevance. As relevance is governed by two factors, namely contextual effect and processing effort, optimal relevance refers to obtaining adequate contextual effect with minimal processing effort. Hence, when translating metaphors, translators must first understand the metaphors in the source text and the communicative intention of the author. Next, they would have to search for the correct contextual assumptions in order to make inferences and establish relevance for readers, so that they can obtain adequate contextual effects and achieve optimal relevance. This thesis finds that when dealing with metaphors, both bible translations used the literal translation method. In addition, the Chinese New Living Translation is more superior in the pursuit of optimal relevance compared to Chinese Union Version.
