Praise and worship is an indispensable part of church gathering. The congregation expresses their praise and gratitude by singing to God. At the same time, it is also one of the ways to spread the word of God.
The development of globalization promotes the exchange of religious culture, and at the same time the internationalization of religious music. With the increasing cross-regional music communication, the translation of religious lyrics has also attracted much attention. As a multilingual society, many churches in Singapore have bilingual or even multilingual services, which inevitably creates a demand for the translation of religious lyrics. This paper will take City Harvest Church in Singapore as the research object and analyse the lyrics of eight English-translated praise and worship songs composed originally by the church.
A song is a combination of language and music. In addition to accurately conveying semantics, the translation of the song should also consider the rhythm of music and whether the lyrics are singable. Based on the functional equivalence theory put forward by the translator Eugene Nida and the translation principle of Mr. Xu Yuanchong, this paper analyses and discusses the beauty of sound, form and meaning in lyrics translation, and whether the recipients of the translation can achieve the same understanding and response as the recipients of the original text.
It is found that the translation of religious words and syntactic structures between the English and Chinese forms of the same songs can be considered to be of functional equivalence. In terms of "three beauties", the translation does retain the beauty of form and meaning of the original lyrics to a great extent, but it is lacking in reproducing the phonological attributes of the original composition.
