Pilgrim’s Progress: From This World to That Which Is to Come, Delivered Under the Similitude of a Dream（中文：《天路历程》）是英格兰新教徒约翰·班杨（John Bunyan, 1628-1688）于1678年出版的基督教寓言著作。18世纪至19世纪期间，小说的翻译因传教士急剧增加，至今已被翻译成200多种语言以及方言。1905年，卫理公会传教士兼翻译家威廉·希勒别（William G. Shellabear）在新加坡出版了Pilgrim’s Progress唯一一本峇峇马来文译本，命名Chrita Orang yang Chari Slamat。论文将探讨新加坡19世纪末至20世纪初的岜岜马来人社群，试图理解译者和出版社的翻译动机，以及过程中使用的翻译策略，描摹出以译文出版为中心的多元系统。 Pilgrim’s Progress: From This World to That Which Is to Come, Delivered Under the Similitude of a Dream is a well-known Biblical Allegory written by English Puritan John Bunyan (1628-1688), and published in 1678. Through missionaries in the late eighteenth to early nineteenth century, Pilgrim’s Progress saw a huge surge in translation works, and has since been translated into over 200 languages and dialects. In 1905, Methodist missionary William G. Shellabear translated and published the only Baba Malay version, titled Chrita Orang yang Chari Slamat, and published it in Singapore. The paper will explore the Baba Malay Community in Singapore from the late 19th to early 20th century, thereby attempting to understand the translational motivations of the translator and his publishing firm, as well as the translation strategies used in the process, to depict a multi-elemental system centred around the publishing of Chari Slamat.
