The paper takes women's self-realisation as the premise to discuss body narratives and social issues, and analyses women's dilemmas in terms of family, society, reproductive rights, and bodily autonomy. Through incorporating feminist literature, existentialist theory, and the context of Singaporean society, the paper seeks to reveal women's struggles and resistance to social constraints. The women in Fish Birth experience alienation at the physical level but accept or defy the women’s role and search for their own autonomy in the patriarchal system. As society progresses, women have achieved remarkable development in many fields, however, they still face challenges due to their gender. Fish Birth shows the ambivalence and dilemma of women under social changes, reflecting the tension between individual autonomy and social expectations. The women in Fish Birth resist the patriarchal system through various means, embodying the consciousness of female identity and boldly striving for autonomy. This study seeks to offer a fresh perspective on Singaporean women's Chinese literature while also creating further space for reflection on the position of modern women within gender politics.
