Summary: | What will the Singapore hawker culture be like 20 years down the road? Will we still be able to taste the char kway teow of our younger days? Will our children or our children’s children be able to have the privilege of appreciating the dizzying array of hawker delicacies we are taking for granted now? All these are questions that should be addressed as soon as possible as our nation undergoes another era of change. With the younger generation nursing higher expectation on the standards of living and age catching up on the current hawkers, the threat of extinction of our local fare is very real. Using the perspectives of both young and old hawkers alike, supported with experts’ views and the public’s opinion, we attempt to shed light on the potential directions that our food culture will be taking. |
