Among the myriad of English bible translations that were published in the late twentieth century, the New International Version emerged as the best-selling bible version in America. Surpassing the venerated King James Version, the New International Version gained mainstream popularity and received recognition in Christian circles. Many Christian denominations, churches and organisations adopted the New International Version as the bible of choice for pulpit preaching and quoting scriptures in publications. The widespread endorsement of this bible translation led to the canonisation of the New International Version. This thesis seeks to address the topic of canon formation of translated texts through a study of the canonisation of the New International Version. This paper will first provide a summary on the definitions of canons, its formation and its relation to translation. Next, with reference to Lefevere's concept of patronage and other factors including the engagement of translators, selection of source language texts, translation philosophies, translation procedures and the influence of the translation, this paper will discuss how these elements propelled the canonisation of the New International Version.
