Summary: | Counter-intuitive to an increasing demand for work-life balance within the labour market in Singapore, flexible work arrangements (FWA) remain underutilised by the labor force. The Singaporean government has touted the benefits of FWAs to organisations as a means to counter the realities of an ageing workforce and the new age of driven young employees. The WorkPro Scheme was introduced to assist organisations to implement progressive workplace management practices by providing funding as well as consultancy services.
This research aims to explore how employers and employees view FWAs; how engagement of the FWA schemes is negotiated and their effects of employer-employee relationships. In-depth interviews were conducted with 24 respondents across different Singapore-based organisations to investigate negotiation strategies used by employees and employers, and how they attempt to improve or maintain their relationships through face-work and emotional labour. |
