The translation of occidental modernist literature in mainland China in the 1950s : the case of Yi Wen

Description
As the one and only official journal specializing in translating and introducingforeign literature in mainland China in the 1950s and 1960s, Yi Wen serves one of themain channels for mainlanders to get in touch with foreign literature and literarytrends. The argument does not employ the original-text oriented approach; it adopts the target-text oriented approach emerging since the cultural turn. Questions of concern are: Can we divide the translation of occidental modernist literature into several phases? What are the characteristics of each phase in terms of source text selection, usage of translation techniques and the professionals’ evaluation of target texts? What are the causes for the manifestation of the characteristics and among those causes, which ones reflect the subjectivity of the translator and which ones are constrained by social factors such as ideology? By answering the above questions, we can get an in-depth look at how politics and social development influence the introduction and translation of foreign literature in mainland China, how translator’s subjectivity comes into play under the manipulation of ideology, and how the translator and the ideology interact with each other.
