Description
Summary:The effectiveness of the High School Religious Education program of St. Paul's College (SPC) Pasig for SY 1992-1993 is evaluated. The design was descriptive and evaluative. Using Stake's Congruence-Contingency evaluation model, Religious Education was evaluated in the light of intended and actual antecedents, transactions, and outcomes. Likewise, the students' religious knowledge, values, and practices were compared across year levels to determine the effectiveness of the program. The respondents of the study were the 720 first year to fourth year high school students who studied at SPC-Pasig since first grade. From the identified population, a stratified random sample of 536 students were chosen across year levels. The other group of respondents were the Religion teachers of the High School Department. They were the SPC sisters, 1 religious priest, and 1 ex-seminarian. The sources of data were the teachers' information sheets, the school's religion syllabi, the National Catechetical Directory of the Philippines (NCDP) guidelines, and the survey questionnaires. In addition, four sets of questionnaires were used for data gathering purposes. There were three sets for students and one set for the teachers. It was found out that the Religious Education curriculum of the respondent school was well-designed. The intended and the actual goals and objectives of the Religious Education curriculum were congruent with the actual outcomes. The teaching strategies and instructional approaches actually employed by the teachers were varied in order to keep the standards set forth by NCDP. The audiovisual materials and facilities were sufficient and extensively used by Religion teachers. Thus, logical and empirical contingencies were noted among the three components of the Religious education curriculum. On this account, it was inferred that this curriculum was effective not only in cognitive aspects but also in values development. Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn:1. The longer the exposure of the students to the SPC-Pasig Religious Education curriculum was, the more knowledgeable they were of the Catholic doctrines. The same held true for their religious values, but not for their religious practices and,2. The intended antecedents, transactions, and outcomes of the Religious education program of the respondent school were generally congruent with the actual or observed antecedents, transactions, and outcomes of the Religious Education program. Recommendations given included intensified mass media education, proper motivation and meaningful exposure to charitable institutions/depressed areas to the students.
