Summary: | With the rise of streaming platforms, watching foreign TV programmes and series has become an indispensable part of entertainment in our daily life. This phenomenon has led to an increasing demand for high-quality subtitles. In the field of audiovisual translation, humour subtitling has been one of the most frequently discussed topics. As humour is closely connected to the language and culture in which it is produced, it poses a genuine challenge to the translator. Thus far, many scholars have conducted extensive research and analyses on subtitling humour. Yet, there are not many studies on subtitling humour in the context of Singapore.
By using Singapore’s iconic sitcom Phua Chu Kang as a case study, this thesis paper aims to focus on Singapore’s sitcom humour and its translation. In this paper, the humour in Phua Chu Kang is classified into 3 categories (Language humour, Cultural Humour and Universal Humour) according to Raphaelson-West’s classification. When it comes to translating humorous subtitles, a successful translation means being able to reproduce the humorous effects of the original text. This aligns with the core of Nida’s Functional Equivalence theory, which emphasizes that the translation should enable the target audience to comprehend the same humour perceived by the original language audience. Hence, Functional Equivalence theory is used in this paper as a guide to analyse the effectiveness of the Chinese subtitles. In addition, during the process of translation, it is often challenging for translators when direct equivalent translation cannot be found in the target language. Thus, to overcome the problem of non- equivalence, this paper also attempts to propose better translation suggestions guided by Mona Baker’s non-equivalence translation strategies.

渐增长,字幕翻译的品质也变得越来越重要。在众多的影视作品中,幽默题材的翻译一直
是备受关注的一大议题之一。幽默话语包含语言形式、文化特征等元素。因此,在翻译的
过程中具有一定的难度和挑战性。至今,有许多学者对英国以及美国影视作品中出现的幽
默字幕翻译进行研究与分析。然而,关于新加坡的幽默字幕翻译研究依然不多。
对此,本文将以新加坡家喻户晓的情景喜剧《鬼马家族》(简称《鬼马》) (Phua Chu Kang) 为素材,着重探讨与分析其中的幽默字幕翻译。为了能够尽可能探讨 《鬼马》中不同类型的幽默,本文会截取 Netflix 中的译文并把其中的幽默字幕依据 Raphaelson-West 的分类法,分为三大类(语言幽默、文化幽默以及普遍幽默)。 在翻译 幽默字幕时,成功的翻译意味着能够再现原文中的幽默效果。这与功能对等理论的所强调 的原文于译文达到相同效果的宗旨一致。因此,本文也将通过尤金·奈达(Eugene Nida)所提出的功能对等理论角度来探讨 Netflix《鬼马》的中文字幕。此外,针对幽默 字幕翻译时所面临的不对等状况,本文将会根据莫娜·贝克(Mona Baker)所提出的不 对等翻译策略分析该剧的中文字幕以及提出改善建议。
