They neither exist in reality nor in customs, but instead they express the power and ideology of the person or organization which named the subject. What the state’s street-naming system reflects are the ruler’s ideology and culture, documenting tangible imagery of the ruler. Numerous academics have already analyzed and published works on the origins and purposes of Singapore’s streets, roads and places names. This thesis tries to analyze the translated versions of these names and the purposes behind the different translation methods used. This thesis divides the contents into three different time frames, namely: (1) Pre-independence and independence (19th century—early 1960s); (2) Independence and development (1960s—1980s); (3) Post-independence (1980s—present). It will cross-examine and compare the major incidents which had happened and policies produced to the translated names, and henceforth attempts to build up the link between these names and the forging of national identity.
