The existence of unpaired electrons in the outer orbital of a free radical, causing that radical attack molecules on its surrounding areas. These negative impacts can be reduced by antioxidants. Types of plants included banana are reported to have antioxidant capacity. The objectives of this resea...

These negative impacts can be reduced by antioxidants. Types of plants included banana are reported to have antioxidant capacity. The objectives of this research were to study antioxidant activities from peels extract of three varieties of banana called as tanduk, nangka and kepok from West Java by determining IC50 of DPPH scavenging activities and EC50 of CUPRAC capacity; determination of total phenolic, flavonoid, and carotenoid content; correlation of total phenolic, flavonoid, and carotenoid with their IC50 of DPPH and EC50 of CUPRAC, and correlation between the two methods. Extraction was conducted by reflux using solvents with increasing polarity. Determination of IC50 of DPPH scavenging activity and EC50 of CUPRAC capacity, total phenolic, flavonoid and carotenoid content were performed by UV-Visible spectrophotometry and their correlation with of IC50 of DPPH scavenging activity and EC50 of CUPRAC capacity by Pearson’s method. The lowest IC50 of DPPH was exposed by ethanol peels extract of nangka banana (2.48 µg /mL) and the lowest EC50 of CUPRAC given by ethyl acetate peel extract of nangka banana (158.39 µg /mL). Phenolic compounds were the major contributor in antioxidant activity of tanduk banana peel extract by DPPH assay. DPPH and CUPRAC methods showed linear results in antioxidant activity of nangka banana peel extract. text
