Antioxidants are compound that can inhibit oxidation reaction by scavenging free radical. Many plants have active compounds which have antioxidant properties such as flavonoid and phenolic compounds. The objectives of this research were to study antioxidant activities of various different polarities extracts (n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol) from corn cob, corn leaves, and corn husk (Zea mays) using DPPH and CUPRAC assays; total phenolic, flavonoid and carotenoid content in various extracts of corb cob, corn leaves, and corn husk; correlations of total phenolic, flavonoid and carotenoid content in each extract with their IC50 of DPPH and EC50 of CUPRAC, and correlation of two antioxidant methods in sample extracts. Extraction was performed by reflux apparatus using solvents with increasing polarity. Determination of IC50 of DPPH, EC50 of CUPRAC, total phenolic, flavonoid and carotenoid content of each extract were carried out by UV-visible spectrophotometry and its correlation with IC50 of DPPH and EC50 of CUPRAC were analyzed by Pearson’s method. N-hexane corn leaves extract gave the highest antioxidant capacity by DPPH method (IC50 8.95 µg/mL) and CUPRAC method (EC50 152.31 µg/mL). N-hexane extract of corn cob and corn leaves and ethanol extract of corn husk can be categorized very strong antioxidant by DPPH method. Flavonoid compounds were the major contributor in antioxidant activities of corn leaves extracts by DPPH method. DPPH and CUPRAC methods had no linear results in all of sample extracts. text |

Free radicals are atoms that have one or more unpaired electrons which can cause damage to
other molecules and responsible for many diseases. Antioxidants are compound that can inhibit
oxidation reaction by scavenging free radical. Many plants have active compounds which have
antioxidant properties such as flavonoid and phenolic compounds. The objectives of this research
were to study antioxidant activities of various different polarities extracts (n-hexane, ethyl
acetate, and ethanol) from corn cob, corn leaves, and corn husk (Zea mays) using DPPH and
CUPRAC assays; total phenolic, flavonoid and carotenoid content in various extracts of corb cob,
corn leaves, and corn husk; correlations of total phenolic, flavonoid and carotenoid content in
each extract with their IC50 of DPPH and EC50 of CUPRAC, and correlation of two antioxidant
methods in sample extracts. Extraction was performed by reflux apparatus using solvents with
increasing polarity. Determination of IC50 of DPPH, EC50 of CUPRAC, total phenolic, flavonoid and
carotenoid content of each extract were carried out by UV-visible spectrophotometry and its
correlation with IC50 of DPPH and EC50 of CUPRAC were analyzed by Pearson’s method. N-hexane
corn leaves extract gave the highest antioxidant capacity by DPPH method (IC50 8.95 µg/mL) and
CUPRAC method (EC50 152.31 µg/mL). N-hexane extract of corn cob and corn leaves and ethanol
extract of corn husk can be categorized very strong antioxidant by DPPH method. Flavonoid
compounds were the major contributor in antioxidant activities of corn leaves extracts by DPPH
method. DPPH and CUPRAC methods had no linear results in all of sample extracts.
