方言与幽默字幕翻译的受众接受研究 :以台湾电影《大尾鲈鳗》为例 = Investigating dialect and humour subtitling in Taiwanese film David Loman : an audience reception study

However, present research on subtitling dialect humour is scarce. Furthermore, in view of the current trend in dialect films, more research should be dedicated to audiences’ subtitling preferences in dialect films in order to enhance viewers’ filmgoing experience. Through a case study of a 2013 Taiwanese comedy film David Loman, this empirical study seeks to investigate (a) Singaporean audiences’ subtitling needs and preferences in the comprehension of dialect comedy films and (b) the relationship between dialect proficiency and Singaporean audiences’ subtitling preferences in dialect comedy films. For the purpose of this study, 82 Singapore citizens and permanent residents were recruited for an online questionnaire, and they were classified according to their dialect proficiency. An analysis of the responses shows that there is a correlation between dialect proficiency and subtitling preference. However, as different respondents have different dialect proficiencies, there is no one uniform preferred translation strategy. Overall, although audiences’ needs and preferences for subtitling in dialect comedies cannot be consistent due to the varying proficiency of dialect, this study has found that each group of audience possess a different evaluation criterion for different translation strategies.
