An analysis of the translation of Singapore museum relic texts from a cultural perspective.

Museum translation is a cross-linguistic and a cross-cultural social activity. Museum relic texts are informative in nature, playing a role of educating the public and conveying the cultural meanings behind relics. Previous studies on museum relic texts have involved two broad areas: translation principles and translation strategies. In terms of translation principles, the discussion not only involves Yan Fu’s translation theory of Xin Da Ya(信、达、雅), but also Hans Vermeer’s Skopos Theory. Translation strategies adopted in the translation of museum relic texts include Domestication and Foreignization, or the combination of both also known as Hybrid. These two broad areas of studies have been carried out on the descriptive texts of the items in various museums in China thus far, yet no study has been done on the museums in Singapore.
On the foundation of previous studies, this thesis paper aims to analyze the translation of the texts of the relics in museums in Singapore from a cultural perspective. Not only are the translation methods and strategies of the museums in Singapore explored (specifically National Museum of Singapore, Asian Civilisations Museum and Peranakan Museum), the thesis also covers two concepts on the same context, Wen Hua Yu She(文化预设) and the three levels of cultural information of museum relics as a foundation and benchmark. Under these two concepts, the characteristics of museum relic texts are discussed together with its effectiveness in conveying cultural information. In addition, this thesis also discusses the limitations of museum relic texts, which is the prevailing cultural gap in translation between different cultures. It involves two areas, lexical and semantic gap in translation. |
