Advocates of “cultural turn” in translation studies proposed that translations are not made in vacuum, as translators function in a given culture at a given time, which influenced the way they translate. Therefore, the development of zero translation in Singapore is closely related to the country’s history and social culture. Under British’s colonial rule, Singapore developed into a multiracial society during the 19th century. Fusion of languages and cultures stimulated by Singapore’s unique political and social environment, resulted in the formation of linguistic mosaic. This code mixing social phenomenon laid the foundation for the emergence and growth of zero translation in Singapore. Consequently, introduction of foreign terminologies through translation into Singapore Chinese language gradually shifted from transliteration to zero translation in the 20th century. The political, language and economic transformation in Singapore’s society after independence, also created a great impact on the country’s usage of zero translation. On that account, this study seeks to examine the binding relationship between Singapore society’s development and the zero translation phenomenon in Singapore Chinese newspapers through applying Postcolonial Translation Theory, Polysystem Theory and Theory of Rewriting to the analysis of zero translation in Nanyang Siang Pau and Lianhe Zaobao.
